October 12, 2018 at 2:45 pm - 3:15 pm UTC-5
CaGBC’s Alberta Sustainable Building Symposium focuses on best practices and innovations, as well as discussion around strategic insights into the future of the green building industry in Alberta. The 21st Annual gathering will take place October 11-12, 2018 in Calgary, Alberta.
Yichao Chen, Building Energy Consultant, and Susan Kapetanovic-Marr, Sustainability Specialist, will be co-presenting Zero Carbon and the Retrofit Economy: Leveraging Sustainability Certifications and Energy Labelling towards Low Carbon in Existing Buildings. This session will take place on October 12, at 2:45 p.m.
Registration information can be found here.
Session Overview:
Our aging existing building stock has significant potential for energy and carbon reduction. Commercially available sustainability certifications for existing buildings such as LEED Canada for EB:O&M, BOMA BEST, WELL, Fitwel standards provide defined framework and metrics for targeting sustainability in existing buildings. This presentation will discuss several case studies where these sustainability certifications were considered for retrofit economics, capital/operating cost, and additional benefits to building users. For example, the CORE in downtown Calgary is the first building of its kind to pursue LEED EB:O&M certification and to use the Energy Jumpstart path to meet energy prerequisite. Centre 10, a high-rise office building in downtown Calgary, is currently pursuing LEED EB:O&M and conducting re-commissioning to identify suitable retrofit opportunities. These case studies aim to inform how different building types may find suitable retrofit opportunities and sustainability certifications towards a low carbon future.
