SFPE 2017: How Canadian Code Regulatory Policy Creates Opportunities for the Fire Protection Engineer

October 11, 2017 at 2:45 pm - 3:30 pm UTC+0

Susan Clarke and Dana Scherf will be co-presenting How Canadian Code Regulatory Policy Creates Opportunities for the Fire Protection Engineer at this year’s Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) North American Conference and Expo, taking place October 9-14 in Montreal. Susan and Dana’s presentation will take place on Wednesday, October 11 at 2:45 p.m.

Session Overview:

For over 10 years the Canadian Building and Fire Codes have used an objective-based format which has opened the door for Fire Protection Engineers to demonstrate that innovative designs meet the required performance. This regulatory policy change has facilitated technical and business opportunities for Fire Protection Engineers in Canada. This presentation will explore these opportunities by providing an overview of objective-based Codes, and demonstrating the application to a sample fire protection Alternative Solution. Challenges on the qualifications and approvals process for Alternative Solutions will be identified. The ongoing and future relationship between the regulatory community and Fire Protection Engineers will also be discussed.
