Guide to Encapsulated Mass Timber Construction in the Ontario Building Code

Project Design, Planning, Delivery, Mgmt. & Best Practices
This session will highlight the recent adoption of Encapsulated Mass Timber Construction (EMTC) as a new construction method in Ontario. The speakers will introduce attendees to the “Guide to Encapsulated Mass Timber Construction in the Ontario Building Code.” The guide aims to familiarize users with the newly implemented provisions governing EMTC in Ontario, providing a comprehensive understanding of their content, intent, and application. Attendees will gain insights into how the new EMTC features align with existing provisions for noncombustible construction in the Ontario Building Code (OBC), as well as the areas where the new provisions diverge or introduce unique considerations. This session is an opportunity for attendees to expand their knowledge and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in EMTC in Ontario.

This session will be presented by Vusal Ibrahimli and Trisha Ashworth on November 29 at 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM.

The Ripple Effect: The Impact of Indoor Pools on Buildings

Optimizing Building Performance & Enhancing Net Asset Value
Indoor swimming pools are a popular and sought-after amenity, but these aquatic spaces can be a significant operational and financial commitment. Amongst all the regular requirements to keep these facilities afloat, there are often unexpected building science issues caused by keeping a large, open tank of warm water indoors. This session will delve into indoor pool projects, from the complexities of managing water damage to the intricacies of ventilation, humidity, condensation, and mold prevention using real-life case studies from buildings around the GTA.

This session will be presented by Greg Fealy and Peter Adams on November 30 at 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM.

Roof Maintenance: From the Design Stage to the Service Life

Optimizing Building Performance & Enhancing Net Asset Value
Roofs are facing increasingly challenging weather conditions that they may not have encountered in the past. Recent events, such as heavy rains and violent windstorms, have highlighted the vulnerability of roofs to extreme weather events. Considering these changing conditions, proper roof maintenance is crucial to ensure roofs can withstand the challenges they face. This session will focus on the importance of roof maintenance throughout the entire life cycle of a roof, starting from the critical design stage. By implementing effective maintenance practices, roofs can exceed their expected service life. The session will cover various diagnostic methods, including visual inspections and non-intrusive investigative techniques.

This session will be presented by Ted Kastoris on November 30 at 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM.

Navigating Winter Roofing Challenges

Optimizing Building Performance & Enhancing Net Asset Value
There are many challenges that designers, contractors, owners and manufacturers face during the design and subsequent construction of a new roof or the replacement of an existing roof. This session will focus on the challenges of roofing during the winter which will include material and system limitations, scheduling and potential impact to the operations of the facility and the owners’ expectations.

This session will be presented by Ted Kastoris on November 30 at 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM.
