Active Transportation Facilities for Vulnerable Road Users

As efforts to increase the use pedestrian and cycling as modes of transportation, and investment supporting infrastructure becomes more widespread, urban highway crossings and interchanges can become a key determinant of the use and success of a community’s active transportation network. This presentation will highlight key aspects of the planning and design of these facilities in Ottawa, and the many measures taken to enhance safety for users.
About The Presenter
Deven Bhatla, P.Eng., Transportation Designer: Deven is a Transportation Designer with Morrison Hershfield’s roads and highways group based in Ottawa, ON. He has six years of experience in the transportation industry. Deven joined Morrison Hershfield in 2017 and is currently involved in numerous aspects of the firm’s transportation services portfolio including planning, design, project management, inspection and contract administration, procurement, and project delivery. One of Deven’s primary area of focus is the planning and implementation of alternative financing and procurement (AFP) projects which involves extensive coordination among multiple jurisdictional authorities. Deven has worked on various federal, provincial, municipal and bilateral infrastructure projects of assorted sizes throughout his career. Some notable projects include the Confederation Line Light Rail Transit System in Ottawa, ON and the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, ON and Detroit, MI. In addition, Deven has previous experience in Alberta’s oil and gas industry. His educational background is in civil engineering.
