2019 IEEE IAS PETROLEUM AND CHEMICAL INDUSTRY COMMITTEE CONFERENCE

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Industry Application Society (IAS) and Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee Conference (PCIC) will hold their 66th Annual Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia. The conference is the premier annual application meeting for practicing electrical engineers in the petroleum and chemical industry. Respected for the high quality and practical application of its technical papers, IEEE-IAS-PCIC attracts a worldwide audience. The 2019 technical program features a slate of 54 papers that focus on the technology and issues faced by electrical engineering in the petrochemical industry.

Presentation: Sizing Chokes for Mission Critical Islanded Power Systems

Morrison Hershfield’s Mike Mosman is presenting a technical paper, co-authored with Scott Manson of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL.) In their educational session, they will share the theory behind each equation for sizing chokes for isolated-parallel power systems.

This presentation and paper is based on Mosman’s patent for Iso-Parallel design and electrical system modeling commissioned from SEL for a large central engine-generator plant. That project consisted of 12 independent medium-voltage parallel busses, each with up to eight 4MW Engine Generators. Each parallel bus was to be connected to a common Iso-Parallel bus to allow for load sharing and equalization across the 12 busses. The connection consisted of a reactive inductor (choke), and the sizing of the choke was critical to the stability of the system. This required complex calculations and modeling, which is explained in the paper, and will be presented at the conference.
