Rehabilitation of the Lester B Pearson Building
The Lester B. Pearson Building underwent an extensive retrofit, repair and modernization to introduce sustainable features to improve occupant comfort and energy efficiency, while preserving its historically significant character. Our technical expertise in material and building assessments, energy, heat flow and moisture modelling, and freeze-thaw risk analysis allowed us to provide comprehensive building envelope design guidance for insulation and air tightness improvements of this one million square foot heritage building. Department of National Defence Headquarters (DND), Carling Campus
The government department required a shift from dozens of downtown locations to one 370-acre ten building campus along Carling Avenue. Morrison Hershfield provided building envelope consulting services including the design and construction review of windows, opaque walls, curtain walls, EIFS, sloped glazing, tunnels, and below grade walls. Our client required a number of items including life cycle cost considerations, ultra-efficient glazing (triple glazing with very low solar gains), security challenges, building envelope LEED considerations, and of course, durability. British High Commission
The 1960s era window design of the British High Commission was replaced to improve energy performance and better security while also satisfying the NCC requirements for this high profile location in the Nation’s Capital. Morrison Hershfield provided building envelope consulting services in support of the window replacement program and granite cladding stabilization. The client’s goal was adequate installation of blast resistant glazing and verification of the structural adequacy of the existing granite cladding. The team completed site reviews to verify conformance with the design drawings and documented the condition of the granite cladding. (Ottawa, ON)
